For a long time it was believed that the race for artificial intelligence would be won with chips. It now turns on a more mundane and scarcer resource: a power socket already connected to the grid. And the industry that holds the most of them is not the one you would expect: it is cryptocurrency mining, long accused of wasting electricity. A grid connection was, until recently, an administrative formality: you filed a request, waited a reasonable time, plugged in. Having become scarce, it changes nature: it is now an asset, tradable, monetisable. A site already connected, with its capacity and transformers in place, is suddenly worth far more than the walls and machines it houses. Value has shifted from the building to the socket; what mattered, the equipment, becomes secondary, and what seemed a given, the hook-up, becomes the treasure.

The socket inherited from a vanished heavy industry
In July 2026, the former miner TeraWulf signed a twenty-year lease to host the AI lab Anthropic at its Hawesville campus in Kentucky. The site is a former aluminium smelter, already connected to 480 megawatts, of which about 401 megawatts are earmarked for AI from 2027, for contracted revenue estimated at around 19 billion dollars over the term. The lever was neither the mining machines nor the crypto know-how: it was the socket, inherited from a vanished heavy industry, which AI comes to reuse as is.

The bitcoin that built it becomes the fuel it burns to reinvent itself as a landlord of electricity.

What the holder of a connection captures is a scarcity rent. Since plugging in takes years, whoever is already plugged in holds a valuable option: to supply today what others will wait a long time for. This value comes not from present productive effort but from a right acquired at the right moment, before demand exploded. The socket is worth a lot not for what it produces, but for what it lets you avoid: the queue. That is the very definition of a rent: income drawn from the mere possession of a scarce resource, not from putting it to work.
